Hima Das, an 18-year old athlete from Assam, now has her name on the list of India’s firsts. Her victory in the 400-meter race at the IAAF World U20 Championships In Finland has scripted history and got India its first ever track gold at a global event.
She is the daughter of a farmer from the village of Dhing in Assam’s Nagon district. Her talent was first identified by Nipon, an athletics coach with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare, and he went on to train her.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reached out to congratulate her. “India is delighted and proud of athlete Hima Das, who won a historic Gold in the 400m of World U20 Championships. This accomplishment will certainly inspire young athletes in the coming years,” he posted on Twitter.
