LifestyleThe Lingerie Glossary: Terms We Bet You Didn’t Know!

When it comes to lingerie, we sometimes have questions about the terminology we use and what each of them means. Sometimes, we tend to get confused or use words interchangeably. If you’re someone who finds yourself confused about what these terms mean, you’re in the right place!

We’ve attempted to make your life easier by breaking down some lingerie jargon and defining them in a way that you will better understand. This way the next time you are out shopping for intimate wear, you’ll definitely be better prepared.

1. Chemise

A Chemise is a loose-fitting undergarment that covers the area around the torso and thighs. It is structured like a lightweight dress and can be worn under your clothes (especially if they’re transparent), as loungewear while you relax at home, or as nightwear for when you want to sleep comfortably. Chemises are generally looser than fitted slips.

2. Convertible Bra

A Convertible Bra is often one of the most convenient options to have in your bra-drobe. They come with detachable, multi-way straps that can be worn in a variety of ways, including cross over the back, as a halter, or even completely strapless. This way you can use just one bra with different outfits including backless styles, crop tops, and so much more!

3. Gusset

A gusset is basically the crotch area of your underwear, which is usually lined with a comfortable fabric. With Zivame’s range of Panties, you can be assured that the gusset is layered with 100% cotton that is soft on your skin and keeps you feeling fresh round the clock.

4. Minimizing Bras

Minimizing bras are designed to give you full coverage, compress and minimize your breasts (whether it’s for comfort, style, or for when you want to be athletic). You can choose the Zivame Minimizer Bra that compresses your breasts and makes them appear smaller. This design not only delivers sturdy support but also gives you a gentle lift.

5. Moulded Cups

When a bra has moulded cups, it means that it is made of a single piece of foam that resembles a rounded breast shape as part of its design. When your bra has moulded cups, they are seamless across the cups and most likely do not show when you wear them under fitted tops. A classic example of this is the Zivame T-Shirt Bra that goes invisible under your everyday outfits while providing the right support and coverage.

6. Pasties

Pasties are a more recent bra replacement that goes a long way when you want to go braless without feeling exposed. Adhesive nipple covers are often referred to as Pasties and are worn for functionality when you need to mask the nipple under your outfits. Whether you choose to wear a plunging neckline or a backless outfit, these are extremely convenient styles that can also be reused!

7. Wire-free

Wondering what it means to go wire-free? A wireless bra is one that does not have an underwire, either for aesthetic or comfort reasons. Wirefree Bras are ideal for everyday wear because they are soft, comfortable, and give you the best kind of support, without any hard wires to lift up your breasts.
