LifestyleDIY Hand Sanitizer in a Few Easy Steps

Maintaining good hygiene has become more important than ever before in the current global situation. Research indicates that a thorough hand wash with soap (20 secs) is effective in killing the deadly virus. Seems like your mom was right all those years ago, right? In case you are running errands and don’t have soap readily available, a good Hand Sanitizer is equally effective in maintaining hygiene.

Did you know that Hand Sanitizers should have at least 60% alcohol content to be effective? If your Hand Sanitizer has anything less than that- it probably won’t work. Now since good Hand Sanitizers are no longer easily available (they sold-out like hot cakes) in the market, what do we do? Don’t worry girl, we’ve got this! Presenting an easy DIY Hand Sanitizer idea!

Here are a few things you need (available in your local pharmacy) to make your very own Hand Sanitizer.

  • 2/3 cups Isopropyl alcohol (99% alcohol content)
  • 1/3 cup Aloe vera gel (92% aloe vera content)
  • Essential oil of your choice (optional)
  • Rubber gloves to protect your hands (this alcohol burns!)
  • Plastic bottles with a flip-top for storage
  • Funnel for pouring the Hand Sanitizer into the bottle
  • Glass bowl and a spoon for mixing

Method:

Wear your gloves before you start the procedure. Carefully, pour two parts of Isopropyl alcohol and one part of aloe vera gel in a glass bowl and mix it thoroughly with a spoon. The 2:1 proportion is important for the sanitizer to have 60% alcohol content (science class deja vu, anyone?)

If you like the fragrance of essential oils, add a few drops into the mixture. Skip this step if you don’t like fragrances or if essential oils aren’t readily available.

Give this concoction a thorough mix. Place the funnel on top of the plastic bottle and carefully pour the Sanitizer in.

Hooray! Your homemade Hand Sanitizer is now ready to use! All you have to do is to squeeze out a dime-sized amount in your palm and gently rub it in.

How cool will it be to try this fun science experiment with your friends and family? Who knows, you may never go back to store-bought Hand Sanitizers ever again! This Hand sanitizer is enough to last for a few months for you and your family.

We know you have heard this a million times already, but like good friends, we would like to remind you again: please maintain hygiene, avoid touching your face as much as possible (we know it is difficult but being mindful is important), and maintain a physical distance of at least 6 feet from others when in a public place.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap or use your Homemade Hand Sanitizer whenever you come in contact with unknown surfaces. Wear a Face Mask every time you step out of your house. If you don’t have a readymade Face Mask, create your own no-sew mask in a few easy steps, instructions are available here.

Ladies, try our sciency DIY and share this information with your family & friends as well. Stay clean, stay home and stay safe.
