Mention beach vacation and all we can daydream about is the sun, shade and Bikinis. Yet, for many of us, it can be a daunting task to be seen in a Bikini. We are always thinking about sexy models with super toned bodies and suddenly, our own bodies don’t feel good enough.

Commit to eating well for your mind, body and soul:

Countless research and trainers will tell you that achieving a fitter body is 70% eating well and 30% exercise. They are right! Eating clean is important for nourishment, maintaining your weight, building lean muscle, repair and everyday body functions. Pay close attention to what goes into your body. Stay away from processed food or simply anything that is ready to eat (read: available in a packet). Eat fresh- veggies, lean meat, eggs, grains, nuts, etc. Drink more water to support your organs and flush out toxins. Remember your elementary biology lesson? You are 70% water!

Incorporate exercise aligned to your goal:

Now that we have discussed motivation and nutrition, let’s talk about exercise. If you want a Bikini body- you are probably after a flatter stomach, toned legs and arms and a rounded butt. This is a tall order but not an impossible one! Since everybody is different, achieving your dream body can take time- so be patient but persistent. Here are a few exercise tips for you:

Start strength training: If you are concerned that lifting weight will bulk you up, don’t be! This couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, strength training will help you build lean muscle that will burn calories even when you are at rest! This is the best way to ensure that your body gets toning and definition. At home, you can get creative and use water bottles instead of dumbbells.

Adding a few days of exercise that gets your heart rate up is the perfect way of doing it. Running, skipping, Zumba, swimming and kickboxing are some fun activities that you can choose from. These exercises help you lose calories and keep the extra weight off for the Bikini season.

Spot weight loss is a myth: If you hear a brand marketing products for weight loss only around the tummy or exclusively for toned arms- run a mile away! Remember, you will always lose weight on the whole. Targeting a specific area is misleading and incorrect. But what you can do is to tone specific muscles. Crunches may help you build abs but if you don’t lose the fatty layer on your tummy- those abs will remain hidden. That is why it is important to incorporate strength training, cardio and bodyweight exercises like sit-ups, crunches, planks, squats, leg lifts etc. 

Develop a well-balanced workout routine that focuses on all your muscle groups through the week. E.g. Day one can be leg day, day 2 for core, day 3 upper-body and so on. Get proper rest:

Over-exercising can be counterproductive. Give yourself a day off to relax and rejuvenate. Sometimes, a break day can do wonders to your weight loss journey. Also, the beauty sleep everyone talks about? Ensure that you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep at night. Remember, fatigue can cause you to abandon your workout and lose focus.
